Tours - Chichen Itza, the very heart of maya land

Chichen Itza

Enjoy a full day discovering the ancient capital of Chichen Itza. The Mayan and Toltec people gave Chichen Itza its name because it was built on the edge of a sacred cenote. “Chi” means mouth and “chen” means to dwell at the cenote. “Itza” comes from the name of the clan that lived there during the classic period of 0-700dc. The site had been abandoned by its founders only to later rise to glory with the arrival of the Toltec’s, guided by Quetzalcoatl and his new religion.
This rich past is reflected in the diversity of the sites buildings where the two architectural styles co-exist. Among the most important pyramids and temples are the Observatory, the Church and the Nunnery from the first period of construction. But the majestic temple of Kukulkan, the amazing Ball Game Court and the Warriors Temple from the Toltec building period are not to be missed.
We will spend the morning exploring Chichen Itza. By then you will have worked up an appetite for lunch, So we will enjoy an authentic Yucatan food, based on tacos, at small charming local restaurant. After lunch, we’ll make a stop at the Samula Cenote for a refreshing dip. Then it is off to the visit of the charming Mayan village of Uayma and its stunning Franciscan church.
Our journey will end at Valladolid, an authentic colonial city, very different from what you will find on the Caribbean coast. We’ll make a stop to enjoy some leisure time in the central square.
